What is a Dental Implant?

If you have a missing tooth, you'll want to have it replaced as soon as possible.

When a tooth is missing, the teeth surrounding the gap may begin to shift out of place, causing misalignment and leading to further dental issues. Additionally, the jaw bone around the area may begin to deteriorate, resulting in a caved-in facial appearance or negatively impacting your ability to eat and talk.

A dental implant is often used to replace the root of a single lost tooth, or even many missing teeth. The implant is a small, titanium screw that is surgically placed into the jaw bone to act like a root for an eventual tooth replacement like a dental crown.

Once healed, a dental implant combined with a tooth replacement looks and functions much like a natural tooth.

The Dental Implant Process

The dental implant process involves a titanium screw (the implant), and a tooth replacement. At the first appointment, the implant is surgically placed below the gumline into the jawbone. This screw will eventually serve as a foundation for the artificial tooth.

After the procedure, a healing period of about three to six months is necessary to allow the implant to fuse with the jawbone and gums.

Once healing is complete, you will return to our office so a crown or bridge can be fitted on top of the implant. Our dentists will be able to make sure that the tooth replacement is the right fit for your mouth.
